Safari Overview
FOUR WEEKS VOLUNTEERING IN SOUTH AFRICA WITH CHEETAH:The Cheetah Breeding and Re-introduction Center is situated near Parys, South Africa. It is widely accepted that the cheetah population has reduced to the extent that the gene pool was severely compromised. The centre has a three phase project include the breeding of healthy genetically diverse individuals, the re-introduction of captive-born cheetah to their natural habitat, and education of the public about the plight of the cheetah to help increase the gene pool again. As a volunteer you will play a vital role in and preparing the cheetah cubs to hunt for themselves, so that we can realize our goal of re-introducing them to their wild habitat. Your work would be varied and may include building/maintaining shelters in the cheetah camps, assisting with behaviour enrichment projects, monitoring and recording aspects of the cheetahs development, preparation of meat for feeding to the cheetah, and maintaining and updating the cheetah database. Volunteers assist with maintenance of roads and fences, partake in game counts and help in a project to educate disadvantaged local school pupils. It's not all work and no play though as you will have one day during the week and Sunday afternoons off giving you plenty of time to relax on the reserve, visit the nearest town or explore some of South Africa's other exciting tourist attractions. Once a month (and thus guaranteed for participants in the four week program), volunteers are taken on a trip to The Kruger National Park.

Itinerary
A TYPICAL DAY VOLUNTEERING WITH CHEETAH IN SOUTH AFRICA FOR FOUR WEEKS:-While we have a routine in place, our timetable is fairly fluid and we have to be ready to act in any eventuality. Here is an example of a typical day as a volunteer at the Cheetah Reintroduction programme:
07:00 - 08:30hr Cleaning the cheetah enclosures and running the cheetahs to exercise them and to provide stimulation and enrichment.
08:30 - 09:30hr Breakfast.
09:30 - 13:00hr Morning duties, which could be a game count, meat preparation, a boundary patrol or the removal of alien invader plant species.
13:00 - 14:00hr Lunch.
14:00 - 16:00hr Afternoon duties, which could be reserve maintenance, spending time with the cheetah's or creating fire breaks.
16:00 - 17:00hr Cheetah Feeding (this can change depending on the time of year).
17:15 - 17:30hr Meeting, we go over the events of the day, and inform everyone of the coming day.
Evening - Free time, a time to socialise and eat dinner.
Please note that your itineraries may differ from this, depending on your own experience and the number of other volunteers on the placement at the same time, and this is simply to give an example.
